Should you start a letter with I am writing
For that reason, I wouldn’t usually recommend that you start an email or letter with ‘I am writing’, any more than I would recommend starting a phone call with ‘I am calling’.
Both are self-evident and therefore a waste of ink/breath.
They are also arguably a little lazy..
